About Maer & PKDI first met Phil in 1972. We were close friends for ten years until his death in 1982. Since then I've shared some of my favorite Phil moments with my friends. They have repeatedly asked me to write my recollections down.
Two years ago, Tim Powers and Jim Blaylock added their encouragement and I began THE OTHER SIDE OF PHILIP K. DICK. It's my response to the many articles and books that have painted a picture of a man unrecognizable from the Phil I knew. He has been depicted as a drug-crazed, abusive man, steeped in mysticism. His memory has become so distorted by some of these accounts that I felt it was time - maybe past time - to set the record straight. My book is not as sensational as some of the information out there, but it is more truthful than some of the lurid tales masquerading as thoughtful analyses. I don't pretend to know why Phil did or said anything, although I do have my theories. My account tells the stories of the man behind the sinister caricature he has become. In my memoir we find a kind, generous and funny genius. Flawed, but nowhere close to the myths about him. So come meet the real man. After all, Philip K. Dick does not need to be sensationalized to be interesting. The truth stands on its own. |
